I PREVIOUSLY revealed here on The Geek Files that the script for Captain America was done and filming would begin in summer 2010. Director Joe Johnston is "readying for a June start", according to a new report on Fangoria. We must now be getting closer to news on casting, with numerous rumours and suggestions, including a list of contenders here on The Geek Files. Fans have come up with many names, recently including Ryan McPartlin (pictured below), who reportedly lost out on the lead role in Superman Returns to Brandon Routh and plays Devon 'Captain Awesome' Woodcomb in Chuck. Meanwhile, Twilight actor Kellan Lutz and Chuck star Zachary Levi have each expressed an interest in the role of the supersoldier. A popular choice has been Jensen Ackles, who won a poll on The Geek Files. The calls from fans turned into rumours he had been officially approached. But the actor said: "I've not gotten any calls from my agent. I have not gotten a script. I have not talked to anyone about it. It's all a rumour. "I'm sure [they'll cast] some big name film actor. They're not going to pull some dude off The CW and give him Captain America. I'm squashing it now, I know nothing about it." Ryan McPartlin.jpgAnother widespread suggestion has been Sam Worthington, recently seen in Terminator Salvation and Avatar. He turned up at an interview in an Avengers T-shirt, sparking talk that he was in line for the role, and then arrived at another interview in a Captain America T-shirt. He told MTV: "I'm a fan of comics. I'm a fan of Captain America. I know they're making the film - but this is my way of saying, 'Go on and make it then, hurry up!'. I think I'd be lynched if I played the role, but I'd kill to play it.'" And he told Sci Fi Wire: "They haven't talked to me but it's just as I said, I'm just a fan. I know how to hold a shield, because I did it as Perseus [in the upcoming Clash of the Titans remake]." The First Avenger: Captain America is set for release on July 22, 2011. The character will then appear in The Avengers team-up movie slated for May 4, 2012. Captain America is the alter-ego of Second World War soldier Steve Rogers, whose capabilities were enhanced to their peak by a 'supersoldier' serum. Hurled by an explosion into the North Atlantic ocean, he remained frozen in suspended animation until his body was found and revived by the Avengers decades later. The character featured in a movie serial in 1944 and then a 1990 film starring Matt Salinger.
